I believe it was 1965 when Lyndon B. Johnson hit us with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. As a young man, I never thought a president would lie to the American People to get into a war.
Later, Johnson regreted his mistake, not taking the Democratic nomination, which was his for the asking. He died shortly after, destroyed perhaps by his mistakes and the number of young men he sent to die. The country hired Nixon to get us out, but it took him years to pull us out of that war (with honor) and 30,000 more men died while our honor was being upheld. In the end there was no honor, and our economy went to hell. Does this all sound familiar? Why don't we learn our lessons from history. We don't have to go back a very long way to see these mistakes. It is simple, just walk away from Iraq, let the civil war that will someday take place there happen. Although sad, it will occur someday whether we are there or not. Pull back all our troops around the world, save the money and create a real national defense. We would take a lot of heat for a move like this, but we have big shoulders and in the long run it will be better for the global economy and ourselves.
We don't need a McCain to be another Nixon, nor do we need an Obama or Clinton as spending saviors to help the poor or middle class, we can help ourselves if the government would just get out of the way.
