Laura's disgusted
| CW FISHER How high and mighty the high and mighty get. I know a woman, First Lady of the United States, America's prima donna, likeable enough, probably smells good. But Laura Bush is upset about what people have been saying about her husband, that he doesn't care that people died in New Orleans, and that's a lie, she says, he's not that way, he cares a lot and she should know. Seems a bit shallow on her part considering thousands died. But that's not what upsets her. People going after her husband, that's what upsets her. People like Howard Dean, chair of the Democratic Committee, who blamed the president for the hurricane, and Kanye West, the rapper, who said on TV that George Bush doesn't care about black people. In a radio interview, Laura said, "I think all of those remarks are disgusting, to be perfectly frank, because of course President Bush cares about everyone in our country... and I know that. I mean, I'm the person who lives with him. I know what he's like and I know what he thinks and I know how he cares about people." The Apologist thinks Laura's remarks are disgusting, to borrow the adjective. All Kenye West said was: "George Bush doesn't care about black people." Truth bombs hurt at first but heal nicely if you don't pick them. Now let's check out what Howard Dean actually said about her husband, and to whom he said it. Ah! He was addressing a convention of black Baptists. What Howard Dean said was: "We must ... come to terms with the ugly truth that skin color, age and economics played a deadly role in who survived and who did not... People are poor in different parts of the country. They are not refugees. They are Americans," he said. Hm. Nothing about George there. Maybe she felt threatened by Dean's remark that the government will be judged by how it treats the old, the young and the poor. And indeed Laura did bristle at the suggestion that her husband had anything to do with their choice of neighborhood, completely missing the point, as aristocracy is so prone to do. Her words: "They lived in poorer neighborhoods. Their neighborhoods were the ones that were more likely to flood, as we saw in New Orleans. Their housing was more vulnerable," she said. "And that's what we saw, and that's what we want to address in our country." Personally, I prefer Kanye West for brevity, with a minor edit: "George and Laura Bush don't care about black people." |
